FDI announces the resignation of its Executive Director, Dr David Alexander

Geneva, Switzerland, 13 July 2010 - Dr David Alexander, FDI Executive Director since August 2008, has decided to resign from his position at FDI World Dental Federation with effect from the end of August 2010. With a background in both dental public health and the global health care business Dr Alexander brought a steady influence to the work of the Federation and the achievements of its charitable objectives, during a time of severe challenge to the organisation’s financial stability due to the global economic crisis.

Key achievements include the setting up of the legal headquarters and management operations in Geneva, Switzerland; the launch and roll-out of the Global Caries Initiative; renewal of official relations status with the World Health Organisation; membership and a voice for the dental profession in the Global Mercury Partnership of the United Nations Environmental Programme; completion of the first phase of the Live.Learn.Laugh public-private partnership with Unilever and agreement for a second phase; publication of the Oral Health Atlas and sponsorship of an online interactive global database; and fund-raising mitigate the budgetary effects of the new office.

Dr Roberto Vianna, FDI President said, “Throughout his association with FDI, Dr Alexander has shown a passion for the cause of improving oral health and been an inspiration to many. We all have tremendous mixed feelings over this decision. It is both with reluctance and sadness that the Executive Committee has accepted this decision.”

“Bringing the FDI World Dental Federation into the centre of international health in Geneva and amplifying the place of oral health in general health and well-being has been a tremendously rewarding experience and positions the federation for increasing influence and effectiveness to bring to reality the vision of leading the world to optimal oral health. I now look forward to spending more time with my family,” added Dr. Alexander.

An announcement will be forthcoming about search and selection to replace Dr Alexander.
