Researchers from the U.S. have suggested that the use of valproic acid (VPA), a mood-stabilizing drug primarily used in the treatment of epilepsy and bipolar disorder, and prevention of migraine headaches, is associated with a lower risk of developing head and neck cancers. In a study of almost 440,000 veterans, they found that participants who took VPA had a 34 percent decreased risk compared with those who did not take the medication.
