As one of the three doctors who travel with the U.C.L.A. men’s basketball team, Ray Padilla had a seat behind the bench throughout the Bruins’ run in the N.C.A.A. tournament.

Being U.C.L.A.’s team dentist for 16 years has its perks.

It also brings its share of frustration. Padilla is considered one of the most outspoken medical professionals in the country when it comes to advising Division I men’s basketball players to wear mouth guards during games. But his guidance continues to go unheeded.
