OSHA is requiring employer training by Dec. 1, 2013, toward employee understanding of new labels and safety data sheets entering the marketplace under a revised hazard communication standard taking effect through June, 2016. The new product identifiers, signal words, pictograms and hazard statements “will improve worker understanding of the hazards associated with the chemicals in their workplace,” the Occupational Safety and Health Administration said at osha.gov. “This training is needed early in the transition process since workers are already beginning to see the new labels and SDSs [safety data sheets, formerly known as material safety data sheets] on the chemicals in their workplace,” the agency said.
