Ghana: Hepatitis B Claims 600,000 Lives Per Year – WHO » allafrica.com
Share on Facebook | Share on zahnigroups | Share on ALUMNIGROUPSStaggering statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) has revealed that 600,000 people die each year worldwide, due to acute or chronic Hepatitis B, while one out of five Ghanaians is affected by Hepatitis B. According to the global health body, Hepatitis B virus is 100 times more infectious than HIV virus. The Director of Administration and Gender at the Ministry of Health, Mrs. Marian Tackie made this known at the launch of the second phase of the free screening surveillance for Hepatitis B in Accra. She lamented that the Ministry of Health was deeply concerned about the rate of infection of Hepatitis B in the Country and pledged to collaborate with Save Your Liver Foundation (SYLiF), a Non Governmental Organization (NGO). Mrs. Tackie observed that modern lifestyle has placed the liver under a constant attack from prescribed and unprescribed drugs such as paracetamol, in addition to alcohol, food additives, environmental pollutants, water chlorination, household chemicals and pesticides.
