120 years old, but young at heart – this is W&H’s image at the end of its 120th anniversary year. And the company is moving forward with a commitment to social causes and innovation.

W&H was founded in 1890 by precision engineers Weber and Hampel. The Malata family assumed ownership of the company in 1958. Innovative product and service solutions, a strong focus on research and development, vision and social responsibility – these are what have made W&H successful since then. The company has received many awards for a variety disciplines, ranging from employee training to their commitment to social causes. On the occasion of their 120th anniversary W&H is expanding its commitment to social causes.

The anniversary

The IDS as the crowning event in a very busy year: W&H’s 120th anniversary year was no exception to the W&H motto ‘People have Priority’. Because during the official anniversary year, from 6 April 2010 to 31 March 2011, W&H has been very active in the social services sector in particular, supporting an international, secular and non-governmental social development organisation for disadvantaged and orphaned children: SOS Children’s Villages.

In addition to many smaller country-specific activities, W&H is sponsoring the SOS-initiated Family Strengthening Programme in Kakiri, Uganda. Thanks to this support, financing for the whole programme has been guaranteed for just over two years. The Family Strengthening Programme in Kakiri was launched in 2006 by SOS Children’s Village to provide support for those children and their families who rely on aid due to poverty or disease. The aim is to improve the families’ health and social situation. Currently around 480 children from 130 families are taking part in the programme. The activities include: providing families with medical care, securing basic nutrition for them, and ensuring access to education for school-age children.

The future at a glance

W&H will also embrace the future fully energised – and not the least bit tired. Innovative products and premium quality – this is what the approximately 100 employees in our research and development department work on every day. The most recent example of our successful product innovation: LED+ is now available in the Synea and Alegra products, as well as the surgical instruments.
